Stefano Vella

Since 1 January 2017 he has been Director of the Centro Nazionale per la Salute Globale at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità. From 2003 to 2016 he headed the Pharmacy Department of the ISS, combining pharmaceutical control and research activities in various fields of human pathology at both national and international level. He currently participates in three major European research projects (two on innovation in health systems and one on HIV treatment), as well as continuing programmes of operational research in Africa and other countries with limited financial resources, in collaboration with the health authorities of various countries and with the Agenzia Italiana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo. In 2000 he organised a major international conference on AIDS in Durban, South Africa, representing the turning point in the battle for universal access to AIDS treatment and the establishment of the Global Fund to fight Tuberculosis, AIDS and Malaria (GFTAM). He is the author or co-author of over 300 scientific papers in international magazines. He edited the book Hiv/Aids: storia, cura, prevenzione. Una epidemia globale tra passato e futuro, Franco Angeli (2016), and he has published Farmacologia di genere (with F. Franconi and S. Montilla), Società Italiana di Farmacologia (2010); No Aids. Globalizzare il diritto alla salute (with D. Minerva), Avverbi (2002).
